Consumer Units and Fuse Boxes Liverpool
Inspection & Installation of Consumer Units & Fuse Boxes in the Liverpool and Merseyside Area
If you haven’t had your home’s electrical consumer unit and fuse box replaced for several years, there’s a good chance that it no longer complies with current regulations.
The consumer unit is an essential piece of equipment which helps ensure that the wiring and electrical circuits in every property meet the latest safety standards, and operate properly at all times.
A unit allows you to isolate individual electrical circuits using a residual current device (RCD) or circuit breaker, both of which are designed to prevent damage to your electrical appliances and even possibly fires by automatically shutting off power when a leakage of electrical current is detected.
Is your electrical consumer unit fully protecting your home?
Under regulations governing the safety of wiring in all homes, a consumer unit must have “one or more fuses, circuit breakers, residual current operated devices or signalling and other devices” to automatically isolate the power to individual circuits, or the whole electrical system.
So the consumer unit is a vital piece in the safety jigsaw for all homes, including yours.
It follows that ensuring that it is working properly is vital, and putting right any faults is entrusted to a qualified, experienced electrical contractor, such as the members of our team at 7 Electrical Group.
While safety measures built into the units mean it is unlikely that your home’s electrical supply will be seriously interrupted, a faulty consumer unit could still leave you at risk of suffering an electric shock.
It’s also important that you know where your home’s consumer unit is located. We can advise you on the best spots for yours, and re-fit it in a more appropriate place if necessary.

Electrical consumer unit FAQs
What is an electrical consumer unit?
A consumer unit is a specialised piece of apparatus for ensuring that electricity is effectively and safely distributed around the individual circuits in your home.
So, for example, electrical appliances which require more power – such as your oven, water heater or cooker, are placed on a separate circuit from those which place less demand on your system.
Additionally, lighting systems are usually placed on their own, dedicated circuits, so that, should a circuit housing smaller electrical appliances such as your kettle fail, an electrician can still switch on your lights to allow them to investigate the fault.
Why is it important that my consumer unit works correctly?
An electrical consumer unit can generate large amounts of heat, from which the metal cladding on more modern units offers greater protection.
However, the plastic which encases many older consumer units might show signs of burning because of its exposure to those high temperatures.
If you see any signs of this kind, call us at 7 Electrical Group straight away, and we will investigate the problem, find out its cause and put it right for you.
How do I know if my consumer unit needs replacing?
There is no ‘wrong’ time to check something which can have a huge bearing on the safety of your house, your family, or your tenants.
But we suggest having a new consumer unit fitted if:
- Your unit is an older type, not fitted with any residual current protection
- On inspection, you’re told that your box doesn’t meet the latest regulations, or has safety issues
- The unit is made from wood, has cast iron switches, has no labels, or the wiring is discoloured
- It contains fuses with old-style wire, cables are not correctly coloured or cannot be easily identified, or any of your wiring is aluminium coated
We will be happy to check for any of the above signs, and advise on what to do next.
Is my plastic-clad consumer unit still legal?
Plastic-clad consumer units are not illegal, but because there were a number of instances of such units fitted in under-stairs cupboards catching fire, and such fires spreading quickly due to a lack of ventilation in such enclosed spaces, it is becoming increasingly common to have the cladding replaced by a metal case.
Where is the best place for me to have a new consumer unit installed?
Because they are purely functional, and their looks will never be one of their benefits, a consumer unit is most often put well out of sight. But it’s more important that it can be accessed quickly and easily. This is why building regulations (Part M) stipulate that the consumer unit and switches must be between 45cm and 1.2 metres above the floor.
